A wildfire in Missaukee County Saturday afternoon brought out firefighters from Merritt, Clam Union Township, and the DNR to battle the flames. The fire started shortly before four p.m., going into the woods off Dolf Road, near Strief road in Holland Township. When they arrived, firefighters found heavy smoke and flames from the fast-moving fire, consuming grass, and some jack pine trees. The Merritt fire chief estimates it was contained to a 20 acre area within 40 minutes, but firefighters were on the scene for about six hours. The fire began when a seasonal resident burned a brush pile, and the fire got away into surrounding dry grass. No structures were damaged in the fire.
