Trooper Jeff Hadley and Trooper Don Bolen, both from the Michigan State Police Cheboygan Post, admitted to shooting a deer out of season while on duty.
It happened November 12 on Mograin road in Benton Township.
Hadley and Bolen say they pulled off the road, used an artificial light and pulled the trigger on the buck.
Both men are still working at the post but are on limited duty until the case pans out.
9&10's Christina Vecchioni and photojournalist Aaron Smith have more details.
if it was anyother person we'd lose are guns, vehicle, hunting rights, along with jail time wat need a badge to commit crimes, they arnt resposible enough to serve as a officer in this state, treat them as if it was me
i have a ccw permit and getting into this kind of troble means it gets taken away from you we dont need people like this on the street protecting us who knows whats next
This is for all you sympathizers- get real! They're big boys now, and they know the rules. Do you think anyone would have any sympathy for me if I decided to shoot a deer from my school bus window? They can pay the price plus more because they are the ones who will put you in jail for doing the same thing.
Maybe they needed some meat for their families. You have no idea what goes on in their family life.. Plus they are there to protect us, so come on people god would even forgive them.. So why can't you all..
Ponder this...could we, as tax paying citizens, go out in the middle of the night, shine deer, shoot them(POACHING), and get away with a slap on the wrist???? Or would we lose our hunting rights, our rifles, and our vehicles, PLUS fines and restitutions???? My boss, an avid hunter, would fire me on the spot, if he caught wind of me poaching while on the clock. I have NO respect for them idiots
I'm so sick of people in this country putting down law enforcement professionals! They did something stupid,it happens to everyone at sometime in their lives. They are human and humans make mistakes.Citizens in the U.S. need to show more suport of police officers instead of hanging them out to dry all the time!
BACK THEM 100%
will you do the same thing for avg joe when you see him poach and deer and look the other way??? IF that answer is no you are worse than the 2 law breakers we are talking ABOUT you took and oath and swore to uphold the law not to only uphold it if its not a fellow officer you know or work with, I am now thinking the whole cheboygan outpost needs to be investigated sounds like might be some organized crime house their that allows each other to make when it involves them a mistake they are now aware of and sorry for but when it involves avg joe lets arrest and degrade the guy
let the police keep responding they are showing just how crooked and deep it all is
These officers should appear before the State Police Trial Board.
Troopers conduct unbecoming a police officer and poached a deer out of season, the deer was illegally taken in connection with police duties, and officers fired their weapons from the patrol car, Both of these charges are specific-cally contained within the rules and regulations of the department. These officers should have a hearing to determine their fate as Law Enforcement Officers
I just want to see a picture of this deer. I spent my whole october studying this deer on my family's farm just for it to be killed by two local law enforcement officers.
They have already been given preferential treatment as this has been on squelch since November 12th! The gentleman who wrote about integrity of the system hit it right on! We can't have tax-paying citizens looking down on Law enforcement. This will be a good test for Vizina, the new prosecutor and to see how Judge Pavlich handles the sentencing.

The reality of the situation:
The Officers will probably accept a plea-bargain and pay a $100 fine with some type of probation and maintain working.
Why??
The system will try to protect the integrity of the system.
They can't have private citizens looking down on Law Enforcement. The problem that most citizens have, is the double standard of enforcement. The State employees (County Prosecutors, State Police, DNR Conservation Officers) will work together to protect the integrity of the system.
They will downplay the situation and the officers will get special treatment, not because they are Officers of the Law, but to protect the integrity of the system.
They can't have taxpaying citizens loosing their trust and faith in the system set-up to protect and serve.
So they will do whatever necessary to protect their position.
the deer must have been threatening them. so they had to use any means to defend themselves!!!!! what a couple of idiots. i hope that when i do need help from the police they don't send either of these boneheads
MOVE ON GET A LIFE THEY MADE A MISTAKE THEY KNOW IT WAS WRONG DID YOU EVER DO ANY THING TO BREAK THE LAW I DID THEY ARE GREAT CITIZENS DONT THROW STONES UNLESS YOU LIVE IN A GLASS HOUSE I DONT KNOW MANY PEOPLE WHO DO
Posted By: Special Treatment - NOT (Cheboygan) | Hide
Why would an individuals position determine if they have to obey the law or not. I don't care what these officers did in the past, they broke the law and should be charged. If a minister robs a bank, should he get special treatment? I DON"T THINK SO. If you as a citizens, with no previous record, active in your church, helping out at the hospice house, go out and shoot a deer illegally, will you get a break. I DON"T THINK SO.
The law is the law and it is instated for all citizens in the private sector and in the law enforcement sector, period! You do do the crime, you do the time....................
I won't pretend to know or understand what went on in their patrol car that evening They know they made a mistake and owned up to it without hesitation I don't know of many people that would have tried to deny it first and lied People of Cheboygan are fortunate enough to have a State Police Post and Tprs like Jeff Hadley Who was instrumental in obtaining automatic defibulators for his community Who knows one of the citizens denouncing these tprs could be saved by the very machine they were responsible for obtaining
This is the most rediculous thing ive ever heard of! these guys need to spend the rest of their lifes in jail! poachers are the biggest criminals of all!
Why should police be held to a higher standard, plus? We all should be held to the same standard. I've seen child molesters and wife beaters walk with no punishment. Average citizens get the biggest break of all. Police officers are made an example of. That is not right. Treat them the same as anyone else, no better or no worse.
A few other comments and questions...Did they trak the deer throught the snow and woods, or was some one else involved? If they tracked the deer themselves how did they explain their time out of the vehicle? How did they transport the deer after recovery? In the police vehicle...if not who transported the carcass for them?
Did they process the deer themselves or did some one else process it for them?
I am not sure, but don't they have to account for each bullet used? If so, how did they explain the MISSING bullet at the end of their shift?
I am a resident of Mograin Road, if it was a buck how many points?
I want to thank the concerned citizen for having the honor of turning in any poacher.
Do we give a citizen that has done this this many comments on what we think? What about the person who killed the wolf up in the UP, did they comment like you are commenting on this. They will pay the price, should they lose their jobs, I'm not sure. But I feel sorry for the co-workers who are having to still work with the public. They are having this reflect on them and not EVERYONE is like these two individuals. They are honest and I'm sure would be cooperative at this time, not like Dan who mentioned that it has happened with others. Obviously everyone who has posted something does not have anything better to do except complain.
These 2 men comitted crime/crimes involving use of a dangerous weapon (firearm). I do not agree with the comments stating that they are human & just made a mistake. As for for them admitting to what they had done.. big deal! If they had gotten away with it would they have talked? They are familar with the law more than most of us & knew the chances they were taking. Does anyone think they would have given you a break if they caught you breaking the same laws?
why must one be a "COP HATING CITIZEN" to think off season dear poaching is wrong? I respect the police department and have faith that the on the clock poachers will be fired. In fact they are not fired and held to their crime in any way it will have major repercussions on your community. I know that if I was ever accused of breaking the law by one of them I would laugh in their face because I have never done anything that bad or ever will.
The position of State Trooper demands honesty and integrity first and foremost! They lost both of these qualities when they pulled the trigger (perhaps long before).
only human? made a mistake? i'm only human but i don't go out poaching deer because i'd loose my truck my gun my money and if i was supposed to be working at the time i'd lose my job this was not a mistake they did it on purpose and need to pay the same penalty as the rest of us. take his truck his gun and fire them now. i can't they are still drawing a paycheck. they should be home practicing for their new jobs. repeat after me; would you like frys with that.
Let it go people. To the troops.. "This too shall pass." Let the system work, obvioulsy most you folks below don't have too much to worry about. Think about your job right now?? You telling me you never did anything that would cause you to "posibbly" lose your job? Most your blogs below is basically corporal punishment to these fellows. You be happy to read the news tomorrow because one commited suicide becuase of a mistake that costed them everything? I lose my job I lose my family basically... and yes I have made poor decesions... WE ALL HAVE. Let the courts to their job and let the internal investigation do its job. STOP GOING FOR THE JUGGLER PEOPLE!
The most important thing is both men told the truth and that they still hold their honesty and integrity, two of the most important things to a police officer. Police officers are humans, humans make mistakes. Allow the men to pay a fine just like any other John Doe poacher. I beleive they shouldn't lose their job's over this, just a strong discipline. Good Luck Guy's!!
If one cannot be trusted to obey the law, how is it fair that they be allowed to enforce the law? Hypocrisy. They are held to a much higher standard every day, allowed to carry weapons and rule over the rest of us - this higher standard should continue into court, and they should lose their positions.
THEY ARE BOTH FINE TROOPERS AND CITIZENS. THEY MADE A MISTAKE.MOST OF THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS ARE PROBABLY FROM COP HATING CITIZENS. REMEMBER, THOSE WHO LIVE IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULD NOT THROW THE 1ST STONE. DO WE NOT HAVE ENOUGH PROBLEMS HAPPENING IN OUR AREA THAN TO KEEP DRAGGING THESE GUYS THROUGH THE MUD
This is not new NEWS...this stuff has been going on for many, many years. These troops just didn't come up with the idea on their own overnite. Go back and interview many former officers and see if they are as cooperative and honest about their actions as these two men when questioned. It would be easy to take a cheap shot at them now...but let the system "work" and let's see what happens.
It sure is funny how each of you is quick to pass judgment and legal opinions. Remember that both officers have paid a much bigger price than most. The average poacher is never posted on the news. They are paying a much bigger price than you can ever believe. Both officers have been disgraced and will live with this for years to come.
Anybody who can support these knuckleheads needs a drug test. I cannot believe their poor decision making skills. To the idiot who babbled about glass houses: we (LEOS) all live in them. DUH. Most people do not see jail time for a deer case. PURE AND SIMPLE. CAN they...yes. And...again..no matter how you cut this there is no felony. Read the laws people.
Reading some of these posts I'm wondering if some of you are for real? Yes, they made a mistake, yes they were wrong in doing this. Be kind to them -?- give me a break, I got a speeding ticket for seve over, were they kind to me? As officers of the law there shouldn't be any slap on the fingers, they inforce the laws and should indeed face what anyone else would plus.
As officers of the law, shouldn't they be held to a high standard? These are the people that are enforcing "our" laws. If their judgement isn't impecable, then should they really be intent on the public's?
First of all this is a misdemeanor. Second the Troopers will charged and a internal investigation will take place. They will not be fired and will proably be transfered. I am a law enforcement officer in the Detroit area. Should the troopers be charged...Yes...Should they be fired...no way. We can't even lodge people for violent felonies in wayne county...Come on people, if this is all you have to worry about..maybe you come live in Detroit...or realize how good you have it.
I THINK WE AS TAX PAYERS DESERVE A SAY IN THIS NOT THE DAM UNIONS FIRE THEIR ASSWE NEED A INVESTICATION BOARD TO OVERSEE ANY AND ALL POLICE MISSCONDUCT TO ALL THE GOOD POLICE OUT THERE MAY THE THE UP THER ALWAYS BE WITH YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES ---KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK---
Back in the day...most michigaders were livid whenever they thought about poaching, the mere thought of someone poaching invoked deep hatred for the poachers, but that was in the days when it was the "indians" poaching. Guess when a non-indian does it, its is ok...or no big deal. hmmm...what has changed in all these years.
Its because they enforce the law and people look to them as role models in the community that what they did more serious than the average citizen They broke the public trust.
yes, poaching is only a misdemeanor, but firing any firearm intentionally from a vehicle is a felony...so double wammy. they should have already been fired for disgrasing their uniforms while on the clock.
Every citizen in our state is subject to the same penalties as each other. Being a law enforcement office does not exempt them from penalties and prosecution the rest of us must face.
If this was the first time in trouble with the law, they both will get a lite sentence. You remember you can plead to a lesser crime also. Should they lose their jobs maybe. If they don't I really think they will wish they had by the sounds of it.
Hey i have worked with these two men, and i will back them 100%. Next time you need help call a crack dealer or these guys. I know who i would call any day any time. They are human and we have all done things we regret. If you live in a glass house don't throw stones.
These two are truly a embaressment to the hard working cops that are here to protect and serve. These are the people that are responsible to uphold the law. The fact that they are spending their time on duty breaking the law insted of upholding it is more than enough reason for them to be fired. I know if I was caught poaching deer, or doing anything illegal, while at work I would be let go asap. Just think you, as a tax payer, were paying their wages while they cruised the back roads shining deer. This probly wasn't the first time they had done it, they just found the right buck this time. I am confident most cops are not like these two. The Prosecuting Attorney seems to be treating them just like anyone else. I hope they are held responsible for there actions and I never have to contribute to one of there paychecks again.
As a fellow Law Enforcement Officer, I admit what these two guys did was wrong, but people forget so quickly that we are humans as are you all. We are allowed to make mistakes, just like you, that is how everyone learns. They admitted what they did, and to me that is a big sign that they have learned from their mistake. For the ones who state they can not or do not trust police officers, just remember that the next time you need our help when you get into an accident or someone breaks into to your house. I can speak for every Law Enforcement Officer when I say, No matter who you are, we will put our lives on the line for you every day of your lives!!
I really don't think it is a big deal. They are troopers but like everyone else they to are allowed to make a mistake and I am sure they relize it now. Maybe they should get a fine but I don't think they should loose there jobs over it.
They are human too! If you don't like your life, go to school, they had too. They clean up dead bodies on the road, save lives everyday! They can not do any law breaking which most of us do daily, any lies you do not know anyone to know about, okay than you are just as guilty! Forgive and forget, they may have saved one of your family members from a drunk driver!
OK, Nobody else makes some stupid decisions, huh? It's not like they held up a bank, they shot a deer for goodness sakes. Yes, they should pay their penalty, but come on, give them a break. It was a crazy, stupid thing- not a violent act and it didn't hurt anyone. Waaaaaaaaaaaa. Find some real crime to fuss about!
This will become an "internal investigation" and the men will be repremanded by their supervisor.
No big deal, they will walk like the rest of law enforcement in the area when they get caught.
The double standard does exist. Don't ever let anyone tell you anything different.
same cops that are trying to convict my son after the person pressing charges admits it never happend thats the cheboygan county way nothing will happen to these officers they probably shared the meat with the judge
Section 750.234a Section
Intentionally discharging firearm from motor vehicle, snowmobile, or off-road vehicle in manner that endangers safety of another individual as felony; penalty;
exception; "peace officer" defined; self-defense.
They did nothing a "citizen" wouldn't do - were not on duty - why hold them to any higher standards in court than anyone else might face? Everyone "enjoys" hearing how a law enforcement officer gets caught being HUMAN - Remember their plight the next time YOU break the law and don't get caught. Or plan to break the law and evade prosecution..
As a trooper in the southern part of the state all I can say is I'm ashamed of you two. Did you forget how you are or who you work for? You make all the other good, hard working troopers look bad and I have no sympathy for what happens to you. No excuse whatsoever....
" nice job idiots" reply.
the law states you loose your car/truck, gun, deer, license for 5 years, 1500.00 fine, 93 days in jail, restitution and fees, community service, and probation....... its a crime with a firearm ........ FYI
What you need to understand is that the troops here do have a union. They will fight for them and probably will not lose their jobs. I dont agree and I believe they should resign on their own. They are a disgrace to the uniform and everything that the State Police stands for. I hope they do the right thing for both the Dept and their families. How utterly embarrasing for the families. I dont feel for the troopers but I do for their loved ones. How big was the buck anyways I hope it was worth it. Lets see 60,000 a year or a wall hanger they have to share...uh tough decision?????????????
Not treated differently? Why do they still have their guns, car, light? What gives? Officers of the law or just Officers of the laws they choose to follow? What a Joke
If they admit to such a crime one is left to wonder what ELSE have they done?...This addmittence may well be to draw attention away from a more serious crime or crimes. They should be investigated throughly to insure no more of the Police Department is tainted by Officers Who Protect each other and Serve themselves
All you folks crying about people getting special treatment, deal with it. That's the way the world is. Sure these two dingbats should get jammed up for this, and trust me they will. But do you have t go on about how it's not fair? A fair is a place you go to ride the rides and eat cotton candy. Boo Hoo!

to the up north cop, most avg citizens see the insides of a jail, for poaching, they get booked, and degraded pay the booking fees, have to sit in a jail and many many times for nothing, cops are above that as obvious here no bail to post no booking fees, no jail time expense waiting for bail to come thru proof our legal systemn is as unfair and non blind as can be, this is for sure not a felony as one poster stated, Police should be held to an even higher standard to abide by laws than the avg citizen instead of the opposite, whats worse is these guys were ON DUTY as law officers when they did this, using tax payer owned vehicle, and on tax payer payed time I feel these guys should be arrested, booked and tossed in the jail WITH the other people, their cl;othes taken away and in jailhouse clothing till bail can be made like everyone else no special privis, let them be just as degraded as the ones they have arrested in the past that would be true "BLIND JUSTICE"
i agree with a poster if it wasnt about a police officer they would have been arrested and had to post bail etc but because they are the supposed Law they get away with it, but poaching a deer is not a felony its a misdemeasnor punishable by a large fine and up to a yr in jail loss of hunting pirvis for up to three yrs, being this involves state Boys i see no fine, nothing out of it, may even get a raise for eliminating a potential car/deer accident oh and lets not forget a medal what a discrace
First of all, no matter how you cut it, this crime is a misdemeanor. Second, it is HIGHLY unlikely that the "average citizen" would see jail time for an illegal deer. Third, I agree...can them. What a terrible decision and a stupid supid thing to do.
They should lose their jobs. I bet they would have no trouble filling their positions at this time, with two individuals who would uphold the law honorably.
If this was about to "civilians" they would be locked up, loose their hunting rights and guns, vehical ect ect. BUT because this is about 2 cops, they will sliode on by. By law they loose their right to carry a firearm after comiting a FELONY. We'll have to wait and see if they are treatewd like common people,
It's good to see a prosecutor that will prosecute anyone who breaks the law, regardless if they are a law enforcement officer or an average citizen. The video states the officers have admitted to the crime. We will see what their punishment will be from the judicial system they took an oath to serve and protect.
Was this at night....and even before gun season opened....I don't think I could trust or respect these two officers if they are allowed to return to full duty. Not a good character reference for our children. Will they be prosecuted for a felony or misdemeanor? Shame on them!!!
