Winds spread Calif. wildfire...Drilling safety bill passes House
Posted: 7/31/2010
PALMDALE, Calif. (AP) — Winds apparently carried embers across a wide concrete aqueduct in Southern California, spreading a wildfire that's threatening homes and power lines north of Los Angeles. Plumes of smoke streamed across Palmdale, a city of 139,000. Helicopters dipped buckets into the aqueduct to make rapid water drops.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The House has approved a bill to boost safety standards for offshore drilling. The legislation would also remove a federal cap on economic liability for oil spills and impose new fees on oil and gas production. Republicans and some-oil state Democrats opposed the measure.
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico's biggest television network canceled a popular Friday news show to draw attention to the kidnapping of four reporters. Media advocates call the kidnappings an escalation of a campaign by drug gangs to control information.
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — A Government official says floodwaters are receding in northwest Pakistan while the United Nations says 1 million people have been effected. Officials say 430 people have died in the deadliest such disaster to hit the region since 1929. Rescuers are using army helicopters, heavy trucks and boats but damage to roads and bridges is hindering efforts.
BEIJING (AP) — A city in northern China notorious for mining disasters has had another. An overnight blast near a workers' dormitory killed at least 17 people Saturday at a coal mine in Linfen city. The state-run Xinhua (shin-wah) News Agency reports that explosives had been hidden illegally in the area and that police had detained one suspect.
