Students Learn Tools of Underwater Exploration
Future underwater explorers of the region got an up-close look at some old artifacts without even getting wet.

Thursday, a class through NMC and the Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve hit the water to learn the tools of underwater exploration.

In this session, the class got trained on acoustics and using sonar equipment to find structures or hidden treasures.

"We're teaching the students how to use this so they can continue on with their archeological careers or their recreational endeavors which they already have," says Brian Abbott, Instructor.

This time the group focused on the old, sunken docks in Elk Rapids that are hundreds of years old.

"We can't really protect what's out here when we don't know," says Chris Doyal, President of the underwater preserve.

Many of the students in the program are dedicated to mapping the bottom of Grand Traverse Bay -- a goal that could take several years to accomplish.

9&10's Ryan Raiche and Photojournalist Bill Froehlich have the story.
