4 Your Information: DIY Tire Change

The vast majority of American adults drive, and yet, so many of us struggle with the basic roadside maintenance that could stave off an expensive repair bill.

With that in mind, here’s how to swap out a flat on your own:

  1. Ensure you’re in a safe area with a flat, firm base upon which to place your jack.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts (just to give them some play, not removing them) on the affected tire.
  3. Consult your car’s owner’s manual to find the jacking point.
  4. Assemble, place and use your jack to lift the tire a small distance from the ground.
  5. Remove lug nuts and pull the tire off.
  6. Replace the tire with your spare and hand-tighten all lug nuts.
  7. Carefully lower the jack.
  8. In a star pattern, use your tire iron to tighten all lug nuts.
  9. Drive away!
