New Flower Project at Clock Tower in Cadillac

Something eye-catching is going on at the clock tower in downtown Cadillac.

Allison Jackson from Rent-A-Gardener has been working on a special project to bring some beauty and color to the city of Cadillac.

Jackson has been caring for about 400 allium bulbs the last few weeks, and she says that this project has a special place in her heart.

“I wanted to do this, the clock tower is such a beautiful site and as I was mentioning I grew up just down the street here, and have spent many a time down here, and so we really wanted to do something to show off the structure and something that would complement this space and something that the entire community could enjoy, so we installed the alliums,” she says.

Alliums are not only pretty to look at—they are also fairly unique.

According to Jackson, alliums have an interesting structure that causes their stalks to rise above any plant that grows around them, making them the most eye catching in a flower bed.

So why start this project now?

Jackson says there is a specific reason she chose this season to plant the alliums around the clock tower.

“I wanted to do (it) this year because they’re moving the clock tower, so it’s been a fantastic feature here,” she says. “I think it’s been about 20 years now, but they are moving it to the other side of Mitchell Street where I believe it is going to be a part of the new trail head, and so as a last hoorah for the clock tower I wanted to do something really special for this space.”

Jackson planted two types of the globe flower: Gladiator and Globe Master.

The flowers have about two weeks left of their bloom before gardeners will go trim and remove the stalks.

If you want to check out these alliums at the clock tower in downtown Cadillac, now is the time before the blooms fade away.
