As the weather warms up and you consider hitting the lake, keep in mind that safety should be your number one priority.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary of TC is offering a Paddle Craft Safety Course open to the public — taught by members of the TC Paddle Club.

Instructors will explain how to remove the kayak from your car.

An easy tip — sliding it down using carpet.

When you head to the water, they tell us to get in the boat on your bottom first.

You should be at knee deep

Then swing your legs around into the boat.

Kayaking and paddle sports can be fun — but should be practiced carefully.

“One of the problems with kayaks is they’re really easy to use, anyone can jump in a kayak and paddle and in less than a minute, find yourself in a dangerous situation,” said John Heiam, with he Traverse Area Paddle Club.

The class starts at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday night.

To sign up, call 231-883-8040.
