“A lot of trees and quite a bit of it overlooks the Manistee River Valley right off to our right and that’s one of the most beautiful views I like to see when I go hiking,” said Lorenn Bach, a hiker with the Spirit Of The Woods chapter.

The North Country Trail is one of 11 scenic trails in the United States.

“Fifty years ago congress passed the National Trail Systems Act in which they did the legal work or passed an act that created all these various trails that we now have in the United States,” said the president of the Spirit Of The Woods chapter, Robert Dunning.

“Hikers can earn these patches, celebrating different milestones with the Hike 50 and Hike 100 Challenges.

The Spirit Of The Woods chapter is a group of about 100 hikers from all over the state — working toward their 50 and 100 mile awards.

“It is a great way and I think a lot of people have gotten out and explored the North Country Trail because of these challenges,” said Bach. “There’s just something about a goal that helps people get out and do these miles.”

Lorenn Bach is taking steps toward achieving her goal.

If she gets in 100 miles before the end of 2018, she’ll have walked 300 miles in 3 years.

“Since the challenge has encouraged me to get out and keep track of my miles, I try to do roughly 5-10 miles each week,” she said.

There are plenty of options on the North Country; it’s the longest of the 11 trails across the nation.

“4,600 miles long,” said Dunning.

Different people explore it from all walks of life….

“Whether they’re young old retired still working,” explained Patti Dunning.

Walking together to praise and preserve the beauty of the outdoors.

“What an asset it is here, what a thing to have in your backyard, it’s just a wonderful asset to have, you couldn’t build this,” he said.
