Wind, rain and cold temperatures didn’t keep runners from competing in the 122nd Boston Marathon Monday, with Michigan native Desiree Linden taking first place in the women’s division.
Linden’s victory makes her the first American woman to win the race since 1985.
The two-time Olympian and 2011 Boston Marathon runner-up ran past the finish line on Heartbreak Hill with a time of 2 hours 39 minutes and 54 seconds.
“So I have heard that when you are in the Boston Marathon, even if you’re in dead last place, you feel like you’re an Olympic gold medalist,” explained Christopher Merendino, from Big Rapids. “Apparently the crowds are super supportive and the crowds are really buzzing that day and everything I’ve heard is that it’s just an amazing experience that you can’t know until you do it.”
