Hook & Hunting: Sturgeon Protectors Needed

One of Michigan’s most beloved fish needs your help in keeping them safe

Volunteers are needed to help guard the Black River as sturgeons spawn and swim upstream later this month.

At this time sturgeons are at their most vulnerable.

Their size and the shallow water they swim in make them a target for poachers

Volunteer shore watchers are their line of defense.

“Historically there has been a problem with people poaching these fish and we are there as citizens as a guard group to watch over the spawning area to ensure there is no suspicious or illegal activity that occurs to help support a threatened species in the state of Michigan,” says Ann Feldhauser of Sturgeon for Tomorrow.
