Deciphering Food Labels

Food labels are supposed to indicate what’s in our food—but sometimes it seems we need a decoder for the decoder.

March is National Nutrition Month, and we are celebrating it by bringing in the expert, Debbie Busick. a registered dietician at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center.

She says to really know what’s in our food, we need a calculator.

But as that’s a bit annoying while shopping for groceries, there is a way to do without.

Some things we should pay attention to include how much sugar the product has.

Jam, for example, is “solid sugar,” Busick says.

The other thing people should always look at are the ingredients.

“If there is a lot of things on the label that you have no idea what they are, I generally try to stay away from those foods,” Busick says.
