Grand Traverse Co. Jail Facing Scrutiny Over Inmate Suicides, Attempted Suicides

The Grand Traverse County Jail continues to face scrutiny for a troubling number of inmate suicides and suicide attempts.

We have received a list of suicides and suicide attempts that have taken place within the jail since last summer after submitting a Freedom of Information Act request.

The document lists 16 instances overall.

One of the suicides happened just last week.

Another was last July involving Alan Halloway. The sheriff’s office is facing a lawsuit over his death.

The latest attempts happened on March 3 and March 6.

We have also submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for a press release on the latest suicide, though we are still waiting on a response.
