Kalkaska High School Student Killed in Crash Identified

One teen is dead and another is fighting for her life after a head-on crash in Kalkaska County.

Kalkaska High School says Seth Chopp died in the crash and a former student, Tori Wieling, is seriously hurt.

The deadly crash happened Tuesday around 4:30 p.m. on County Road 571.

Kalkaska High School says they are deeply saddened to hear about the deadly crash.

The school will have members of their crisis response team available all day Wednesday and in the coming weeks to meet with students.

The sheriff’s office tells Seth Chopp was driving the car, crossed the center line and hit an American Waste garbage truck.

Chopp was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tori Wieling was the passenger in the car and was taken to Munson Medical Center immediately.

The driver of the garbage truck was treated at the scene for minor injuries, but is O.K.

Deputies have determined that speed, along with the road conditions were a factor.

This is a devastating situation for the community, so the school is also telling parents to contact their office if there is any additional help they can provide.
