Jack’s Journal: New Lyfe Restoration Bicycle Ministry

Life isn’t easy for Rob Burroughs. His disabilities can slow him down, but they definitely don’t keep him down!

Most days, regardless of the weather, he’s outside his camper working on bikes that he gives away.

“Then give them to kids of low income families, people who don’t have the money to buy a decent bike,” explained Rob.

Yes he repairs bicycles, but his favorites are the trikes for kids with handicaps.

One story he tells is of the 10-year-old boy whose disabilities forced him to ride a bike with training wheels.

The local kids teased him. That’s when Rob built one very special trike.

“Full suspension, over the top, 18 speed bike. From then on, the kids who teased him were begging to ride his trike. I said, ‘Man, this is cool,’” said Rob.

Rob takes no money for the bikes he builds. He works totally with parts from donated bikes, buys parts when he has extra cash and fires up his old welder when it’s needed.

“The look on those kids faces, I can’t explain it. It’s the biggest thank you you can get. The look in their eyes, it’s like you handed them the keys to a Ferrari,” explained Rob.

He calls his efforts .

Robert can be.

In 2017 he gave away 170 bikes and trikes.  His workshop is a tent that barely covers his work area.

He tries to be respectful of his neighbors when he has noise to make.

As long as his health holds out, donations keep up and there are kids who need him, Rob will keep being the bicycle man.  His wish is someday to have a building to house his efforts.

“Someday hopefully, I’ll have a place where I can put my old camper, live in it and make all the racket I want,” said Rob.
