What’s Trending Wednesday: National Cut Your Energy Cost Day

It’s What’s Trending Wednesday on Michigan This Morning and it’s also National Cut Your Energy Cost Day!

We have three tips that can reduce the amount of energy you use not only during the winter, but all year round.

Tip #1: Keep your vents open and clean.

Check your vents and make sure they are opened.

Keeping vents closed will not reduce the amount of energy used, it’ll actually increase the amount.

Vents use air filters to keep dirt, dust and other unwanted particles from blowing around in your home.

Replacing these filters monthly can assist in proper airflow.

Tip #2: Manager your appliances.

For example your dishwasher uses water from the hot water heater.

To save more on water heating, set your dishwasher at 120-degrees or on the “low” setting.

Your refrigerator and freezer temperatures can also be adjusted.

Energy Star suggests keeping your fridge between 35 and 38 degrees.

Tip #3: Insulating the right way

More than 50 percent of energy used for winter heating is lost through the walls, floors, ceiling and attics.

says adding fiberglass insulation to attics is the most cost effective way to save money.

Add a rug or a pad to open floor areas to help prevent heat from escaping.
