Fire Rips Through Bay Area Recycling For Charities Plant In Kaleva

A fire has destroyed the Bay Area Recycling for Charities.

Crews battled the flames at the widely known nonprofit, well into the night.

It’s a story we’ve been following since the fire broke out Tuesday.

Firefighters rushed to the facility off of Industrial Drive in Kaleva Tuesday afternoon.

The fire is out now, but there is extensive damage at the plant.

We were told workers inside the building smelled gas before it quickly caught fire.

The founder of the Bay Area Recycling for Charities tells us they had been renting the building.

Inside were thousands of pounds of recycled materials like mattresses and electronics.

Crews were still working to put it out late Tuesday night and they say it was a difficult to put out because of those materials.

It took six departments and more than 170,000 gallons of water to get it under control.

Right now, crews are still trying to find the cause but say there are no known toxins in the smoke.
