Two neighboring counties’ sheriff’s departments went head to head in a little competition this last fall.

Deputies from Mason and Oceana county participated in ‘No Shave November’ and raised money for two local charities.

“We had a lot of fun for a couple months and gave some money to some very worthy causes,” said Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

“I had contacted Sheriff Cole and asked him if he would be interested in a little competition between the counties, and he jumped at the chance to do it,” explained Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

“In October and November we allow the deputies to grow beards of they want, and they can pay a fine of up to $25 a month to give to a local charity,” said Cole. “You can tell by the guy smiling who probably won, so we were able to raise $2,620 here in Mason County. We gave our money to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital Cancer Patient Assistance Fund. That’s a totally nonprofit and that money will go to people in Mason County dealing with cancer issues to help pay for heating bills, food bills, gas to get them to doctor’s appointment and stuff like that.”

“The Oceana Sheriff’s office raise $1,122 and that donation is being made to the Crystal Valley Care Fund, which makes donations to cancer patients and fire victims, disaster victims,” Explained Mast. “It’s kind of different to see the guys in that kind of light too. After you see them clean shaven for the last several years and then all of a sudden you see them with a month or month and a half worth of whiskers on their face.”

“It was a really great morale builder within the department and between the departments, so we will certainly continue this,” adds Mast.
