America’s Longest Serving Republican Senator Announces Retirement
America’s longest serving Republican Senator will retire at the end of the year, despite the president’s request that he stay in office.
Senator Orrin Hatch from Utah announced Tuesday he will not seek an eighth term.
Hatch has served in the Senate for more than four decades.
He helped pass more than 750 bills into law, the latest was last month’s sweeping tax reform bill.
President Trump claims Hatch is one of his biggest supporters.
The president doesn’t want to see him leave, or see the empty seat be filled by one of his most outspoken Republican critics – former presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Romney has not said whether he will run for the seat.
