Meeting Set to Discuss Future of Father Marquette Cross in Mason County
There is now a special meeting set to discuss the future of the Father Marquette cross in Mason County.
The cross has been up along Pere Marquette Lake in Mason County for more than 60 years.
It’s dedicated to Father Marquette, an explorer and missionary from the 1600s.
The Michigan Association of Civil Rights and the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation says the cross is unconstitutional.
The groups say the First Amendment’s establishment clause prohibits the township from displaying religious symbols.
The Pere Marquette Township Board will hold the special meeting Jan. 23 in Ludington.
We will be there and bring you the latest on the cross controversy.
