Hometown Tourist: Symons General Store

There’s something that feels very much like home about an old general store.

In the heart of downtown Petoskey you’ll find , established in 1950s, that has become a treat for those who visit.

“Symons does have a very unique history.  We’ve pretty much been the center stone of downtown Petoskey community for decades. We actually just celebrated our 60th anniversary last year and we were founded by the late Tom Symons,” said Stephanie Fritsch, general manager.

A walk through the door is a step back in time at Symons General Store.

“When you come in here, you’re going to be greeted and you’re going to be treated like a family member.  I can’t imagine that anyone would ever come here and not have flashbacks to their past. You can smell the baking when you walk in,” noted Fritsch.

It’s a family atmosphere built on tradition like grabbing a sweet treat from their array of candy, gourmet cheese or taking a trip down into the cellar where they have more than 400 different types of wine.

“A lot of customers that have been coming here for their entire life they came here as children getting candy out of our candy jars. The wine cellar is, you walk down there and it almost takes your breath away, the different varieties from all over the world and we have antiques down there like the registers that we used to use back when the store opened,” explained Fritsch.

Every item you get here is made with a lot of heart and you’ll leave with that same sense of nostalgia that’s kept generations coming back.

“We want to make your experience special and unique, and we want you to leave and have something to share with your friends and family that you can’t find anywhere else.  You really have to come in and see if for yourself,” said Fritsch.
