Hometown Tourist: Friske’s Farm Market

in Ellsworth is brimming with fresh apples from their orchards.

They grow 27 varieties and this time of year is a great time to visit to get fresh apples, homemade donuts and apple cider.

We take you there in Hometown Tourist for a peek at this must-stop northern Michigan destination for the fall.

“We are a three generation family farm and farm market. It is not your average fruit stand, so our goal is to provide an experience that’s exceptional and beyond what most people would expect at an average farm market or fruit stand,” said General Manager Heidi Friske.

Friske’s Farm Market is far from your average fruit stand.

A trip here is a taste sensation from their pumpkin and apple cider donuts and caramel apples, to their delicious breakfast and lunch items.

“The first thing that hits you when you walk in in our bakery, everything is made from scratch and made fresh every day,” said Heidi.

Goods by the jar, or from in the bakery, or picked to make your own at home, here it’s a fall extravaganza.

Over at the production facility they can make about 250 gallons of fresh cider an hour all with apples from their orchard.

“We use a variety of apples to try to get the best flavor that we can out of our cider and the process involves a rack and cloth press, so the apples are ground up and then there’s sprayed around into a cheesecloth type of material and pressed with 3000 pounds per square inch of pressure.

“We get about 125 gallons out of each press, so we get about 250 gallons an hour,” said Friske.

Take a bite into a crisp apple and breath in the fall fresh air, a trip to this family farm makes fall in northern Michigan complete.

“It is nostalgic, just the ambiance of coming out to the farm on a fall day, and picking apples yourself, and having fresh donuts and cider, and it just provides a really old fashioned timeless family experience that everyone always looks forward to,” said Friske.
