More than a dozen drug manufacturers and distributors will now be taken to court by two Michigan counties for misleading marketing and sale of opioids.

The lawsuit alleges the manufacturers are using a concentrated and coordinated strategy to change the way doctors and patients think about pain, and to encourage a widespread prescription use of opioids.

There were 817 opioid-related deaths in Wayne County in 2016, up from the 506 in 2015.

Oakland County reported a rise to 33 deaths in 2015.

Last week, Newark, New Jersey also announced it has filed lawsuits against several manufacturers.
