Former Farwell School Janitor Accused of Sex Crimes
A former Northern Michigan school janitor is accused of trying to accost children in a sexual manner.
The Clare County prosecutor says Donovan Cantu was arrested in September and faces four serious charges, each involving attempts to commit sex crimes with kids.
Clare County sheriff’s deputies made the arrest a year after the prosecutor says Cantu left his job as a janitor at Farwell Area Schools.
Not many details are known yet.
What we do know is that the Clare County prosecutor confirms Donovan Cantu once worked as a janitor for Farwell schools.
The prosecutor also says Cantu is charged with two counts of trying to accost children for immoral purposes.
Court documents show Cantu is also charged with two counts of using computers to commit the crimes.
Cantu is listed as a youth coach for the Farwell Youth Wrestling Club online.
Interim Farwell Superintendent Tom House told us the club is not run by the school district.
House also said in 2016 Cantu had issues that ended with his resignation.
“The matter was handled quickly and effectively by the administration here at the time and that law enforcement was involved early on,” said House. “It’s paramount that anybody who works with children does that.”
We reached out to members of the wrestling club, but have not gotten a response yet.
Cantu could face up to a maximum of 16 years if convicted of all four charges.
He is expected to appear back in court in early November.
