The political speeches are hotter than the weather as one of the most high profile events for the state and National Republican Party begins on Mackinac Island.

Hundreds of prominent Republican Party leaders are in our neck of the woods for the 32nd Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference.

Campaign signs and canvassers fill the streets of Mackinac Island.

It’s a big deal especially for locals, the 1st congressional district is playing host for the next few days.

“The title of this conference is leadership conference and to have prominent republican leadership from throughout the country here, to come here to inspire people to step up to lead, this is a big deal, the next two days are going to be intense,” Rep. Jack Bergman, Republican 1st Director said.

Many consider this weekend the unofficial start of the campaign season.

With a big midterm election on the horizon new candidates use the forum to put a face to their name.

“We actually call it a beauty contest so you come to the island you put on a great display you talk to a lot of precinct delegates, and you try to make a good impression,” Stan Grot, candidate for Secretary of State said.

Friday was also a homecoming for RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel.

She was just the state chair last year, but the now Republican National Committee leader says the GOP has a bright future, taking some time to do a victory lap

“We have a White House, we have a majority in the senate, we have the majority in congress, we have the Supreme Court and we have 34 governorships across this great nation,” McDaniel said.

And we will be at the conference with you every step of the way so be sure to stayed tuned with Northern Michigan News Leader throughout the weekend and online.
