Portion Of Saint Marys River Closed Due to Grounded Cargo Ship Near Sugar Island

A portion of the Saint Marys River is closed after a cargo ship ran aground near Sugar Island.

The 630 foot merchant vessel ‘Calumet’ was headed from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario toward Brevort in the Upper Peninsula when it ran aground just before midnight Wednesday night.

The U.S. Coast Guard is currently on scene.

They say the river is closed to commercial vessels from the Soo Locks to 6 Mile Point.

So far, no injuries have been reported and there are no signs of any pollution.

The cause of the grounding is under investigation.
