Multiple Departments Battle Flames At Emmet Co. Wood Mill; Cause of Fire Unknown
A big building used to make wood products went up in flames in Emmet County Tuesday night.
Several departments worked to put out the fire that started at Manthei Veneer Mill off US 31 near Petoskey.
You could see black smoke for miles as crews from several departments came out to help.
At this time, we do not know the cause of the fire but again, no one was in the building or injured.
We did talk to the president of Manthei Veneer who says they will work through this and come up with a plan for their family business.
“We’re not sure what happened. We’re thankful that it looks like everybody’s OK and we’re thankful for the first responders were able to get here right away and do what they could, it’s obviously a very sad day for the company and for the employees and for the family,” Jeremy Manthei, president said.
It’s a very emotional time for employees and the family business.
“There’s about 85 people work here and with the Manthei Veneer we ask for prayers for all the families. They’re going to be out of work it’s devastating,” Kathryn Manthei said.
This is not the first time it’s happened.
There was a fire here back in 1967.
We’ll bring you updates on the cause as investigators work to figure it out.
