Commission On Aging Millage Proposal On The Ballot In Benzie Co.

We’re kicking off our primary election coverage with a look at what’s on the ballot across Northern Michigan.

Polls opened Tuesday morning at 7:00.

9&10’s Lauren Scafidi is at the Benzonia Township Hall with a look at one of the big ballot initiatives there.

13 polling places in Benzie County will be open until 8:00 p.m.

One proposal on the ballot Tuesday is the Commission on Aging millage proposal.

It would raise just over $1 million by charging 85 cents on each $1,000 of taxable value.

With that money the Commission on Aging will provide more funds for services to citizens over 60 years old.

“Right now we are seeing increases in our programs by double digits over the last couple years," explains Benzie Senior Resources Executive Director, Doug Durand. "For example home delivered meals is up by 65 percent and we’ve added another additional route for delivery of home delivered meals and we are also looking at adding a fifth route. Our in home services are up by 50-60 percent as well, adding more staff to meet the needs we’re continuing to see."
