Traverse City Study Addresses Downtown Transportation

A new study for downtown Traverse City is shifting gears for the community when it comes to transportation.

Back in October, a transportation consulting company was hired to complete a transportation demand management study.

The study isn’t quite done, but Wednesday night the public was invited to a forum to see what they’ve discovered so far.

The point is to help the city and DDA better understand their local transportation for future projects.

A main topic brought up during the forum was parking utilization.

Parking administrator for the city Nicole VanNess gives an example, “If we kept the rates the way they are on Front Street, but then we reduce them say on State Street or Union Street that would shift some of the utilization. So those who are looking for prime spaces will be able to find them and those who are trying to be more cost conscious will be able to say I’m willing to walk the couple blocks.”

The final proposal won’t be completed until October.
