Wildfire In Benzie County Now Out After Crews Battle For Hours

“We’ve got the tools and the people ready to go when something like this does happen,” said Tim Webb, forester for the DNR.

The DNR says a wildfire in Benzie County is now out.

It spread to around 40 acres in the Grass Lake Area in eastern Benzie County.

We just spoke to the DNR who tells us they were able to use an air boat to run a hose from the Betsie River.

And from what they can see, the fire is extinguished.

The DNR believes a lightning strike sparked the fire Monday afternoon.

Crews say the flames were difficult to access because it was in a remote swampy area.

Luckily, three sides were surrounded by the river.

“The fire danger wasn’t very high today, it was in the moderate range in most of the Northern Lower Peninsula again we had lightning activity and some dry grass in that swamp and off she went,” said Webb.

Crews say they will head back out Tuesday morning to make sure nothing sparks back up.
