Gratiot County Sheriff’s Deputy Accused Of Sexually Assaulting Former Family Friend

A woman says she’s the victim of a sexual assault.
And she says this man, a former family friend and Gratiot County Sheriff’s Deputy is the one who did it.

The victim says the assault happened in 2013 when she was 15 years old.
Robert Morningstar now faces third degree criminal sexual conduct, among other charges.

"A lot of sometimes they have their own blame or they think it’s their fault, they think it’s someone they trusted or they were close," said Amanda Hart.

A woman says she was learning to drive when it took a sinister turn. Court documents show Robert Morningstar was a family friend and offered to help her practice. The documents say Morningstar pulled off on the side of a road around Lake Isabella and sexually assaulted her.

"When an allegation is made and a criminal case is taken it doesn’t matter who the person is that may have committed the offense. For us we are going to do a thorough investigation," said Post Commander Larry Schloegl.

The investigation, leading to Morningstar’s arrest and several sex crimes charges in Isabella County.

"Anytime that you have crimes against persons and somebody who was victimized it always strikes closer to home it’s the number one priority of the cases we investigate here," he said.

Local crisis center Listening Ear has resources specifically to help victims of sexual assault. They say sometimes a victim doesn’t want to come forward right away.

"We want them to do a trauma narrative and be able to share the trauma with someone who is close so they can process this. And how you do that will look different when you’re doing it with a 15 year old depending on if it’s fairly recent or if it’s somewhere maybe happened over a period of years and just coming forward to talk about it," Amanda Hart said.

We reached out to the Gratiot County Sheriff’s Department to check on Morningstar’s current employment status, and whether he worked there at the time of the alleged assault.
We are still waiting for a response.
