What’s Trending Wednesday: National Hot Dog Day

Whether they’re grilled, boiled or cooked over a campfire, hot dogs are always a favorite summertime staple. And since July 19 is National Hot Dog Day and What’s Trending Wednesday on Michigan This Morning, we wanted to share a few recipes to help get you in the spirit.

BLT Dogs

  • It’s not your typical hot dog – and it certainly isn’t your typical BLT.
  • Ingredients
  • 4 slices bacon
  • 4 hot dogs
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 1 cup shredded romaine
  • 1 cup sliced tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp. finely chopped chives, for garnish

  1. Preheat oven to 425°. Wrap a slice of bacon around each hot dog, securing the ends with toothpicks. Place on a baking sheet and bake until the bacon is crispy, about 20 minutes.
  2. Spread a bit of mayonnaise onto each hot dog bun, then layer romaine and tomatoes inside.
  3. Top with bacon-wrapped hot dog, then sprinkle chives on top.
  4. Serve immediately.

Mac & Cheese Dogs

Get all of your favorite comfort foods rolled into one delicious dish.

  • 2 tbsp. butter
  • 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • kosher salt
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded Cheddar
  • 1 lb. macaroni elbows, cooked
  • 6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled, plus more for garnish
  • 4 cooked hot dogs
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • Chopped fresh chives, for garnish

  1. Make mac and cheese: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add flour and whisk until combined. Let cook until golden, 1 minute, then pour in milk and season with salt and pepper. Let thicken, 3 minutes, and add cheddar. Stir until melted and creamy, then add cooked macaroni and stir until coated. Stir in cooked bacon.
  2. Top mac and cheese on hot dogs and garnish with more bacon and chives.

Grilled Cheese Dogs

Two classics – one dish. This could be the way to go for those of us who can’t decide.

  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 2 tbsp. butter, softened
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp. onion powder
  • 4 hot dogs, sliced lengthwise
  • 3 cups shredded Cheddar
  • Sliced green onions, for garnish

  1. Flatten hot dog buns with a rolling pin. In a small bowl, stir together butter, garlic powder, and onion powder. Spread all over bottom side of buns.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, sear hot dogs (working in batches if necessary) until charred, 2 minutes per side. Set aside.
  3. Place bun buttered side down in skillet and top with 1/2 cup cheddar. Top with a hot dog and sprinkle with a little more cheddar and green onions.
  4. Cover with a lid and let cheese melt, then use a spatula to close the bun.
  5. Repeat with remaining buns and dogs.
