Pres. Trump’s Lawyer: Trump Jr. Did Not Break Any Laws When Meeting Russian Lawyer
President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer says Donald Trump Jr. did not break any laws when he met with a Russian lawyer who reportedly has ties to the Kremlin.
There were others in the meeting, including senior White House adviser Jared Kushner, along with former campaign chairman Paul Manafort.
Publicist Rob Goldstone, who helped arrange the meeting, and a Russian-American lobbyist Rinat Akhmetshin were also there.
Akhmetshin was born in the former Soviet Union, served in its military and also has suspected ties to Russian intelligence.
President Trump’s lawyer says the president had no knowledge of the meeting and offered up this defense.
"If this was nefarious, why the Secret Service allowed these people in? The president had Secret Service protection at that point, and that raised a question with me," said Jay Sekulow, President Trump’s attorney.
A spokesman for the Secret Service downplayed that claim, saying no one was screened at the meeting because Donald Trump Jr. was not under protection at the time.
