Wexford Co. Commissioners Consider Upgrading 911 Services

People in Wexford County may be getting an upgrade to their 911 services, a project 16 years in the making.

The county board of commissioners listened to a proposal for service plan updates at Wednesday’s meeting.

The presentation comes after sheriff Trent Taylor requested a modernization of emergency services.

A few of the proposed changes include a 911 advisory committee, restructuring central dispatch as a new department, or even contracting it out to another jurisdiction.

“So if you want to keep it local, I would say you still have to consider shrewd ways of tapping into the technological resources that you can’t afford to do individually, but you can afford to do mutually,” Doug Van Essen, legal counsel said.

Another aspect of the plan would be tighter regulation of wireless carriers who handle the wireless dispatch network.
