Update: Manistee Man Dies Following Officer-Involved Shooting

We’re learning new details about an officer-involved shooting that happened in Manistee County.

The Manistee Police Chief says it all started Tuesday night when an officer was investigating complaints about neglected, rundown areas on Second Street in Manistee.

9&10’s Sarah Grimmer is in Manistee with more details.

Police say 73-year-old Lee Milks came out of his home with what appeared to be an AK-47 in hand.

The officer told Milks to put it down, but he refused.

The chief says Milks then loaded the gun and was about to point it at the officer.

The officer then shot at him several times.

It’s not clear how many of those shots hit Milks.

Milks was flown to a trauma center, where deputies say he died overnight from his injuries.

The officer who fired the shots was not injured but has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues,

“We live in a dangerous world police officers are trained we live in a world where people treat officers with less respect than they should,” says Manistee Public Safety Director, Chief Dave Bachman. “It’s not uncommon for people to engage a police officer, it doesn’t happen in Manistee very often in fact this is my first officer involved shooting in my 19 years on the job.”

The case is now being handled by Michigan State Police.
