Northern Michigan in Focus: Scat Squad

Some kids start lemonade stands, others mow lawns.

But two Traverse City girls are earning money with a business that takes care of your dog’s business.

It’s all to help them realize their dreams, and has one of the best business names around.

Chief photojournalist Corey Adkins introduces us to the Scat Squad in this week’s Northern Michigan in Focus.

“We’re picking up poop.”

You might be thinking to yourself, ‘what an odd way to start a story!’

“Our dad thought it would be a good idea for us to do,” says Madison Hodges.

This story starts when the Hodges family, from Traverse City, were on the road downstate and saw a sign that gave them an idea.

“I do competitions. We actually started the business when we were driving down to my competition in Ypsilanti,” says Ava Hodges.

You see, Madison likes to sing and Ava likes to do gymnastics.

These things cost money.

“And our dad thought it would be a good idea for us to make some money,” explains Ava.

So at ages 10 and 12, they started their own business.

“Called Scat Squad,” says Madison.

Ava adds, “We came up with the name by brainstorming in the car.”

The two girls got to work.

“It’s a crappy job, but somebody’s got to do it,” explains Ava.

The business model isn’t rocket science.

“We go around and drive to the house and go around the yard very carefully, and we pick up the poop and dump it in the bucket,” explains Ava.

What do they get in return?

“Money!”

It’s not the most glamorous job.

“Our first one there was a lot of poop, and it took almost two hours,” says Madison.

Does picking up all that poop gross them out at all?

“Yes, it does. The last one we went to, it was really gross,” say Ava.

But that doesn’t matter because this future singer and future gymnast are learning that in order to reach your goals in life, you gotta earn it.

“Don’t ask your mom. Go out and earn your money,” advises Ava.

Madison adds, “Go out and pick up poop.”

It’s something we can all look up to.

“This pays off and it’s cool to earn our money,” explains Madison.

So if you’re in the Traverse City area and your yard needs help…

“Go to scatsquad.com and it will go right to our Facebook page, and we pick up where they left off,” says Madison.
