New Freshwater Sustainability Major at NMC Draws Students

A new college major at Northwestern Michigan College is allowing students to learn about our great lakes and how to keep them sustainable.

NMC and Western Michigan University have teamed up for students interested in freshwater science.

The program allows students at NMC to get their associates, then move on to their bachelors with WMU, all while staying in Traverse City.

The program hopes to fill many positions nationwide in need of those knowledgeable about sustaining the great lakes.

“We’re in Michigan and we’re surrounded by the great lakes and have this incredibly precious resource to us. It’s a really unique undergraduate program, there’s really nothing like it in the country,” says WMU Environment and Sustainability Program Director, Steven Kohler.

Only four students have graduated from this program so far and another two are expected to graduate this December.
