Charlevoix County Murder Trial Day One: Opening Statements

Continuing coverage on a Charlevoix County murder trial.

Matthew Fruge is accused of stabbing his friend, Jacob Conklin to death at Fruge’s home last October.

Tuesday, both sides gave their opening statements.

The prosecution is looking for a first-degree murder conviction.

They say both Fruge and Conklin struggled with mental issues and took drugs before the stabbing.

The defense says they don’t dispute that Fruge stabbed Conklin, but they say Fruge struggled with PTSD and no one took any drugs.

They’re arguing that Fruge was not in a proper state of mind when the crime happened and are trying to prove insanity.

9&10 News has a crew in the courtroom and will have more from day one of the trial tonight at 5&6.
