Hook & Hunting: Chumming

For those of you fishing in Northern Michigan, how you lure your fish may be changing.

Chumming is one way to lure fish by dropping organic materials, such as corn or fish eggs, into the water.

The DNR currently does not regulate chumming in the state of Michigan, although the issue has been explored.

Next week’s decision has an array of options up for discussion, however the Manistee County Sport Fishing Association support is not making any changes.

“Because the options are limited and there’s no middle of the road choice that may appease to all the parties we decided as a board that we wanted to stay with the no regulations, allow chumming as it has been," says Denny Kuenzer.

The NRC is expected to consider chumming regulations at the Gaylord meeting on June 9th.
