Sightseeing in Northern Michigan: Veterans Day

Today is a special day for veterans all around the country, including right here in Northern Michigan.

Everyone has their own ways of observing the day.

We have Vietnam veteran Ray Moore’s story in tonight’s Sightseeing in Northern Michigan.

“I think it’s a part of our heritage, knowing that we’ve had people that have gone into the military service to serve and protect our way of life, and it’s just a kind of a learn thing as you age that you respect those that have served before.

It’s, I think, reflective. You sit and remember those that you knew maybe as you were growing up that have passed away, and reflect on the fact that they were willing to give time and perhaps their lives.

Every name has a story behind it.

Showing respect for the names that are on the wall, showing respect for the area around whatever memorial is there.

As you go through, even the private cemeteries, you see those head stones and maybe pause.

I go into this, the park here, I’ve got two uncles and a stepfather whose names are on there, and it’s an opportunity to go back and reflect on growing up with them, and knowing them, and missing them.”
