Hook and Hunting: Steelhead Fishing Season

Spring is quickly approaching, and that means as rivers clear up, anglers grow anxious to fish for steelhead.

As water temperatures rise and the levels come up, steelhead spawning and spring fishing really start to heat up.

Fish will come in from the great lakes as well as from inland lakes into rivers.

The DNR says this is an exciting part of the fishing season for anglers.

“Steelhead fishing is exciting because its first thing in the spring, everybody’s got cabin fever, wanting to get outdoors and as the melt-off starts the action heats up and they really have an opportunity to get out and have some fun as the steelhead run comes in,” said DNR fisheries biologist Neal Godby.

The DNR also says for anglers to check regulation guides to make sure the streams anglers want to hit are open for this time of year.

The DNR is offering a steelhead fishing clinic at the end of this month in Cadillac.
