Feedback at 5:00: Should Text Senders Share Accountability With Drivers?
Wednesday's Feedback at 5:00:
Here in Michigan, it's already illegal to text and drive.
But in New Jersey, they're taking it a step further.
A recent court ruling made it so if a person who knowingly sends a text to a driver, that person can share liability if the driver causes an accident.
The New Jersey court said the sender would be liable if the person had a reason to know the recipient was behind the wheel and would read the messages.
The court added someone who texts a driver is not liable for their negligent actions, but the texter has a duty to refrain if they know the person is driving and likely to read the message.
Do you think Michigan should adopt a policy that holds text senders accountable as well as the drivers?
