Energy Committee Approves a Bill to Help Protect Sleeping Bear Dunes

The Sleeping Bear Dunes will now have even more protection thanks to the Federal Government.

Michigan’s Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow pushed for the bill to preserve 32,000 acres of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and the energy committee approved it.

Under the legislation, areas designated as wilderness are undeveloped and possess significant and valuable natural characteristics.

Recreation areas will still be used.

Hunting, fishing, trail use, and camping would continue, and motor boats would still be allowed offshore of the dunes and allowed to beach in areas near the wilderness area.
