Polio Survivor from Nigeria Visits Traverse City, Spreads Message About Wheels of Hope

The Traverse City Rotary partnered with Ayuba Gufwan about 4 years ago to raise money for “Wheels of Hope” to build wheelchairs for polio survivors. Gufwan lives in Jos, Nigeria, he's currently visiting Traverse City. He contracted polio when he was just 4 years old, having to walk on his hands until he was 19 when his Uncle built him a wheelchair.

Gufwan started and directs the “Beautiful Gate Handicapped People Center” in Nigeria, where more than 5,000 wheelchairs have been built from bicycle parts for polio survivors. The debilitating disease affects thousands all over the world; Gufwan and others in Nigeria work daily to raise funds.
