Local City to Cash in on Oil and Gas Drilling
A proposed oil and gas drilling site for one local city is now a go. The town's mayor says he's in the process of signing a lease agreement with a Grand Rapids drilling company. Lake City in Missaukee County is among several spots in Northern Michigan seeing an oil and gas boom. The DNRE approved a permit last August. Drilling and testing started this spring just outside of Lake City. City leaders say they looked into all the risks and benefits and have now made the final decision. Lake City will lease 140 acres, money the mayor says they'll use to fix up the city's recreational areas. 9&10's Alex Jokich and photojournalist Eric Lloyd investigated the potential environmental risks and have more details.
