Landowners Get Mineral Rights Questions Answered
Local landowners tapped by oil and gas companies got their questions answered about leasing their mineral rights. They packed into a meeting hosted by the MSU-Extension in Cheboygan and Petoskey Wednesday. Experts, including a geologist and lawyer, educated landowners about what they need to know before they sign. DNRE Geologist Andrea Sullivan says they've known a large portion of shale beneath part of Northern Michigan could produce natural gas. But this is the first opportunity companies have had to drill, thanks to new technology. The MSU-Extension says once landowners agree to a lease, the companies will run test wells to see what they can find, then decide if it could be a permanent well.
