Veteran Grand Traverse Co. Sheriffs Deputy Arrested
Police say a 12-year veteran Grand Traverse County Sheriff's deputy turned on them, after assaulting his own family. Last night around 12:30am, the Michigan State Police responded to a domestic situation at the deputy's home. When they arrived, they say Deputy Kipp Needham was laying in the driveway face-down. At some point, the troopers say Needham had a loaded and cocked semi-automatic pistol. Police say Needham tried to run from the officers, who eventually caught up to him. They say Needham punched one of the troopers in the face several times before they arrested him. Needham is being held in the Leelanau County jail tonight. He faces four charges, including domestic violence against two family members and assaulting a police officer. Needham is now the third Grand Traverse County deputy this year to find himself in trouble with the law. Erika Waddell and photojournalist Justin DePrekel have the story.
