A fun evening out on the water turned deadly last night for a Northern Michigan teenager. The Maple City teenager tried to swim across a Grand Traverse County lake, but he never resurfaced. Police say Nicholas Cooper was swimming with friends when he suddenly went under the water. The teen drowned at the Twin Lakes Camp on North Twin Lake just before 8:30 lat night. Officer Joseph Soffredine, accused of drunk driving, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of impaired driving in court Tuesday. Investigators say Soffredine drove his car off the road and crashed in February in Grand Traverse County. The two deputies who responded never ticketed Soffredine or gave him a field sobriety test, even though witnesses from the bar he was at say he was visibly drunk.
