Lost Port of Mackinac Papers Part One

Last year a family from the Eastern U.P. contacted the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society about donating a bunch of old documents it didn't know what to do with. Turns out the papers are first-hand accounts from the Port of Mackinac and the Straits during a tumultuous time in the area's history. Letters and ship manifests reveal more about the day-to-day life of the area at a time when the United States was only a few years old and the State of Michigan didn't yet exist. But it was a time when naval and commercial power flowed through the Straits and much of it is documented in the papers. Kaz and Corey present part one of the “Lost Port of Mackinac Papers,” a treasure the shipwreck society didn't need to retrieve from the bottom of the Great Lakes. Part Two will air Wednesday morning and you'll meet some of the characters who shaped the Port for better or for worse.
