Meridian Wildfire Burning 8,800 Acres
Northern Michigan's news leader has an update this morning on the still burning Meridian Wildfire in Crawford County. That wildfire has now charred 8,800 acres and the warm temperatures forecasted for today won't help. The fire was previously estimated at more than 7,000 acres, but that number has since been revised to 8,800. The fire is burning in South Branch Township along M-18 and F-97. It is 65% contained. Carol Nilsson with the U.S. Forest Service says right now they do have a perimeter 95% around the fire. 12 homes are destroyed and 2 other homes and nearly 40 outbuildings are damaged. If extra officers are available this morning, evacuees can be escorted to their homes if they need medicine or to check on pets.
