Wind Energy Grid Concerns

Green energy is all the rage these days, including in Northern Michigan. But modern wind turbines throughout the country, including a wind farm in McBain in Missaukee County, are connected to what's being called an “outdated grid system.” More than $1 billion has been invested in upgrades to the grid, but it's not enough. The transmission company says without updates, wind energy will not be able to progress too much further in Michigan. As for who would pay for the upgrades, that has yet to be determined. But so far the Obama administration has set aside billions in grant money for this purpose. 9&10's Alex Jokich and photojournalist Michael Bulthuis have more details.
